Dr. Marc Bustin

Dr. Marc Bustin is professor of petroleum and coal geology in the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of British Columbia, president of RMB Earth Science Consultants, and a principal of CBM Solutions Ltd. He has over 30 years experience in the petroleum sector, with broad experience in the realm of fossil fuels both in research and in his consultancy practice.

His professional experience includes employment by Mobil Oil Canada, Gulf Canada Resources prior to joining the University of British Columbia and subsequently one year with Elf-Aquitaine (France), CSIRO (France) and CNRS (Australia). Dr. Bustin has consulted in the area of unconventional gas resource evaluation for a variety of small-through-large petroleum companies in Europe, Africa, North America and Asia. Dr. Bustin has published over 150 scientific articles on fossil fuels, with particular emphasis on gas shales as well as coal-bed methane exploration and development. Most of Dr. Bustin's research and consultancy is focused on evaluating gas shale, tight sandstone, coal-bed methane and oil shale reservoirs.

Dr. Bustin is a past recipient of the A.L. Leverson memorial award from the AAPG, the Thiesson Medal from the International Committee for Coal Petrography for his contributions to coal sciences/organic petrology and the Sproule Award for contributions to the study of unconventional gas resources. Dr. Bustin is an elected fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

Michael Hogan

Mr. Michael Hogan is a consultant to the E&P and midstream oil and gas industry. Mr. Hogan’s 25+ years of experience includes domestic and international executive management, acquisitions, divestitures and financial responsibility for companies valued in the hundreds of millions. His technical experience includes managing successful drilling and well completion projects ranging from shallow development to deep high pressure, high temperature directional wells and the construction and operation of compression and gas processing plants and regulated natural gas transmission pipelines and facilities.

Mr. Hogan was affiliated with the Somerset group of energy related companies for nine years and continues to perform consulting assignments for them, including the Somerset Gas Transmission Co, where he formerly held the position of Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (COO). Mr. Hogan also served as President and COO of Somerset Oil & Gas Company, Inc. and President of Somerset Production Company.

Prior to becoming affiliated with the Somerset companies, Mr. Hogan served nine years as President and five years as Senior Vice President of Engineering & Operations with US Energy, an independent E&P company with producing assets in numerous states in the US and abroad. Prior to this, Mr. Hogan was Berea Oil & Gas Company’s West Virginia Operations Manager. Mr. Hogan began his career as a Drilling and Well Completions Engineer for Arrowhead Gas Producers, a Canadian exploration and production company.

Mr. Hogan is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, the Association of Energy Engineers, past President and current member of the Board of Directors of the Independent Oil & Gas Association of New York, the Ohio Oil & Gas Association, the Independent Petroleum Association of America and the Ontario Petroleum Institute. Mr. Hogan is a Syracuse graduate and has taken graduate courses at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Tulsa.
